Today Parliament will table Budget Vote 2 during a physical sitting of the National Assembly and a hybrid plenary sitting of the National Council of Provinces. The budget, which will be tabled simultaneously by National Assembly Speaker Ms Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, sets out the resources allocated to support Parliament’s constitutional work.

Budget Vote 2 provides funding for Parliament’s core functions, including law-making, oversight of the executive, public participation, intergovernmental relations and international cooperation. It also supports the administrative and institutional systems that enable Members of Parliament and political parties to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The tabling of Budget Vote 2 is an important moment in Parliament’s annual programme, as it outlines how the institution will be resourced to fulfil its democratic mandate. By funding the structures, programmes and support services that underpin parliamentary work, the budget helps ensure that Parliament remains equipped to serve the people of South Africa effectively and accountably.
