The Portfolio Committee on Transport has begun its week-long oversight visit to KwaZulu-Natal with a meeting with the Msunduzi Local Municipality for a discussion on challenges with the Integrated Public Transport Network System (IPTNS) programme, otherwise known as the BRT system.
For the current year, the project had been allocated R100 million and the municipality is moving forward with implementation. The committee heard that the municipality intends to procure 22 buses initially, however changes in leadership in the taxi industry has caused various problems and led to project stagnation.
Mr Obed Moleele, senior manager of integrated public transport system, said stakeholder meetings are taking place, but challenges related to the local taxi association require the municipality to reengage with them on various issues.
The committee’s visit is a follow-up to one in 2022 when it was assured that following the City’s suspension of the IPTN grant, implementation of the project was continuing.
Acting portfolio committee Chairperson Mr Cris Malematje cautioned that the committee wants to see results on the ground and benefits flowing from the project to the people of South Africa, rather than read bad news about the project in the media.
The committee is on a week-long oversight visit to KwaZulu-Natal to conduct inspections of infrastructure projects in the province.
