The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) permanent delegation visited the Leeudoringstad School for the Deaf and Alabama Primary School on the last day of the Provincial Week in the North West province. These schools are located in the Maquassi Hills and Matlosana local municipalities.

“We are here to see value for money appropriated,” said Mr Boingotlo Nthebe the Provincial Whip and head of the delegation at Leeudoring. He emphasised the importance of a school curriculum that adequately prepares learners for the world of work.

During her presentation, the Head of the Department of Education and Sports Development, Ms Stephinah Semaswe, stated that the overall employment created by building the two schools is 91.14% (247) male and 8.85% (24) female.

The Mayor of Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, Ms Noni Kgabi, told the NCOP delegation that different government departments run a variety of projects at the same time in the municipality without the knowledge of the municipality. Ms Kgabi said that the departments do not introduce the projects to the municipality, as they should, and a problem develops when the municipality is expected to account.

Members of the NCOP delegation said they were not there to assign blame, but rather to assess value for money. “We are happy that there is progress in the building of these schools. Next time we come, the schools will be up and running. We will follow up on issues that were not adequately addressed,” Mr Nthebe said.
