The Chief Executive Officer of the Council for Geoscience (CGS) which is one of the entities of the Department of Mineral Resources Mr Mosa Mabuza has reassured the members of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy that mining in South Africa remains a sunrise industry.

Briefing the committee on the council’s annual report for the 2018/19 financial year, Mr Mabuza said that South Africa consist of large variety of mineral reserves that are still untapped. He said that investment is also required to conduct a full exploration in the marine geology.

The committee has congratulated the council for achieving a clean audit in the year under review and hailed it as a shining example of good corporate governance.

The CGS is a scientific research council with a public mandate to promote research and extend knowledge in the field of geoscience as well as providing specialised geoscientific services.

The committee is in the process of looking into the annual reports of the Department of Mineral Resources and entities reporting to the department. This is in line with the constitutional mandate of Parliament to hold the executive arm of State accountable and monitor how public funds are utilised.
