JOB SUMMARY
As the Senior Parliamentary Legal Adviser, you will be required to manage litigation and provide legal support services to Parliament.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BE:
- Provide legal advice on a range of subject matters to the Presiding Officers, Parliamentary Committees and the Secretary to Parliament
- Draft legal instruments
- Manage Litigation and dispute resolution cases and attend to related processes
- Advise on complex matters and provide support, guidance and quality control to work of a team of Legal Advisers
- Discharge delegated functions
- Assume tasks delegated by Chief Legal Adviser
TO QUALIFY, YOU MUST HAVE:
- be in possession of a 4 year Law Degree (Desirable: Masters in Law: Constitutional and Administrative Law).
- be an admitted as an Advocate/Attorney of the High Court.
- have eight (8) years’ post admission experience as a Legal Adviser in a Legislature or Public Sector environment.
- Litigation Management experience will be a distinct advantage.
You must also demonstrate knowledge and experience in:
- Relevant branches of the Law, such as Constitutional Law (including Parliamentary Law), Administrative Law, Labour Law, Law of contract, Public International Law and Finance Law
- Interpretation of Statutes and legal drafting
- South African electoral system
- Parliamentary and House procedures and political climate and environment
- Committee procedures
- Civil Court procedures
- Oral and written communication skills
- Presentation, planning and prioritising skills
- Legal research skills
- Advanced MS Office suite skills
- Interpersonal and supervisory skills
- Analytical, interpretation, influencing and negotiating skills
