JOB SUMMARY
The Languages Services provide the mechanism to engage all citizens through the translation of Parliamentary documents, and interpreting services to the Houses during plenaries, Committee proceedings, public hearings, and oversight visits, and a record of parliamentary debates through Hansard reporting for the Houses of Parliament.
Language Services contributes to the strategic goal of meaningful involvement and participation by citizens and all interest groups by ensuring the availability of all official languages during parliamentary proceedings, public hearings, oversight visits, and the consultation process. This includes feedback mechanisms for engagement with the public and interest groups, particularly the marginalised and vulnerable groups.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing Hansard Reporting and editing, interpreting, and translation services to Parliament. Also responsible for coaching and mentoring of Language Practitioners and quality assurance and checking of work performed by practitioners and or peers.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BE:
- Checking and editing
- Monitoring and evaluating
- Interpreting
- Hansard Reporting (Transcribing and Editing, and proof-reading)
- Translation
- Coaching and mentoring of Language Practitioners
- Terminology Development
TO QUALIFY, YOU MUST HAVE:
- Grade 12/ NQF Level 4 with Sepedi as a major subject plus a Relevant Bachelor’s Degree or related qualification in Languages with applicable majors at NQF Level 7. Please include qualification transcripts along with your certificates.
- 5 years of language practitioner experience, having rendered translation, transcribing and interpreting services within a similar environment.
IN ADDITION, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DEMOSTRATE THE FOLLOWING SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND JOB-RELATED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge and Skills:
- High Proficiency in English and at least one other official language
- Good communication skills, verbal and written skills in English and other official languages
- Computer literacy
- Excellent transcribing skills
- Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting skills
- Excellent translating, editing and proof-reading skills
- Knowledge of and experience in the latest language technologies
- Good planning skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Time management skills
- Keen interest in current affairs
- Ability to work under pressure
- Meeting tight deadlines
- Expected to work beyond normal working hours
- Willingness to work longer hours when needed
- Required to travel for parliamentary work across the country
A Senior Language Practitioner must:
- Work independently in executing the responsibilities of the job, across all three business units, with a clear work schedule
- Work in a conducive work environment
- Be furnished with appropriate tools of trade in line with professional norms and standards
- Maintain good working relationships with Managers, supervisors and fellow employees
- Keep transparent and open communication for team effectiveness and effective support to Houses and Committees
to ensure operational excellence and business continuity
