CONSTITUTIONAL AND LEGAL SERVICES OFFICE

(FIVE YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a legal advisory service to Parliament and the Parliamentary Service.

Key performance areas will include:
  • Providing legal advice (written and oral) to the Presiding Officers, Parliamentary Committees and the Secretary to Parliament
  • Drafting legal instruments
  • Assisting attorneys and Counsel representing Parliament in litigation and dispute resolution.
Requirements:
  • A 4-year Law degree (preferably with a Master's degree in Law) with majors in Constitutional and administrative Law and Admission as an Advocate/Attorney of the High Court
  • Minimum 5 years' post-admission experience as a Legal Adviser.
Skills requirements include:
  • Experience and knowledge of relevant branches of the Law, such as Constitutional Law (including Parliamentary Law), Administrative Law, Labour Law, Law of Contract, Public International Law
  • Knowledge of South Africa's Electoral System, Parliamentary and House procedures, as well as the political climate and environment
  • Knowledge of Committee procedures
  • Knowledge of Civil Court procedures
  • Sound oral and written communication skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Planning and prioritising skills
  • Advanced MS Office suite skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Legal drafting skills.
