Parliament, Tuesday, 20 February 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture completed the process of shortlisting candidates to be interviewed and possibly recommended to serve on the board of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB).

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Beauty Dlulane, said the committee is satisfied with the calibre of the nominated candidates. “These are the best leaders that we believe will give this august institution direction and effectiveness in how it executes its constitutional mandate. Their appointment will ensure the institution is not subjected to a leadership vacuum,” said Ms Dlulane.

Ms Dlulane said finalising the shortlist gives members of the public enough time to submit their views on the candidates. This is in fulfilment of the public participation aspect of the process, a central part of the continued strengthening of our constitutional democracy.

The public is encouraged to submit comments to the committee once the names of the shortlisted candidates have been published. The interviews are scheduled to take place in March 2024.

PanSALB is South Africa’s prime entity tasked with promoting, protecting and supporting all official languages of South Africa, including the Khoi, Nama and San languages.

“We trust all the candidates we have unearthed are and will be capable of carrying out this mandate and that they will do without fear or favour and even doubt. Our languages are us and need to be preserved, protected and promoted,” Ms Dlulane said.
