Parliament, Thursday, 28 March 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises has adopted the draft report on its investigation into the allegations made by the former Department of Public Enterprises Director-General Mr Kgathatso Tlhakudi relating to irregularities in a transaction involving the sale of South African Airways (SAA).

The report states that insufficient evidence and documentation was provided to either prove or disprove the allegations. The committee recommended that the matter be referred to the Special Investigating Unit for further investigation.

The committee expressed its frustration with the delays and lack of cooperation it received in the investigation from the Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Pravin Gordhan, in providing key documentation related to the transaction. However, it acknowledged the information it did eventually receive.

The committee also adopted its legacy report on its work, especially on oversight, promotion of public participation and passing transformative legislation.

The chairperson of the committee, Mr Khaya Magaxa, thanked members of the committee for what he described as their diligent work in the sixth parliamentary term. He said the committee has fulfilled the mandate that was set at the beginning of the sixth parliamentary tenure, notwithstanding the challenges it faced.

Mr Magaxa said the committee looks forward to a seamless handover of its work to the next committee that will be configured in the seventh Parliament.
