Mr Nkosiyakhe Amos Masondo is the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, one of the two Houses of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa. He was elected to this position after May 2019 national general elections in South Africa.
He was born on 21 April 1953 in Louwsburg, about 50 kilometers from Vryheid, and grew up in Soweto (Johannesburg).
In the early 1970’s he became a member of both NAYO (National Youth Origination) as well as SASM (South African Student Movement).
He was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1976 to 1981 for his participation in the liberation struggle. He was again detained under the emergency regulations from June 1985 to March 1986 and again from July 1986 to 1989. He served as member and leader of the Soweto Civic Association.
He is a founding member of the United Democratic Front. On his release in 1989, he became regional secretary for the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the trade union umbrella organisation and the African National Congress’ regional election coordinator. In 2001 he was elected as a Member of the Gauteng Legislature and was subsequently elected to serve as Mayor of Johannesburg. He was the Mayor of the City of Johannesburg from 2001 to 2011 and successfully led the process of deepening and unifying the Local Municipality into a greater Metropolitan Democratic Local Government.
He later served in the headquarters of the African National Congress at the President’s Office.
He first became a Member of Parliament, serving in the National Assembly, from May 2014 until May 2019. In the National Assembly, he was appointed to the Joint Committee on Ethics and in the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
He also served on the Joint Standing Committee on the Financial Management of Parliament and on the Ad Hoc Committee to nominate a person for appointment as the Public Protector.
He has been awarded many awards and recognised for various achievements on governance.
