Parliament, Friday, 12 May 2017 – Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry today conducted interviews with the three shortlisted nominated candidates for the position of Chairperson of the Board of the National Lotteries Commission.

Committee Chairperson Ms Joanmariae Fubbs said the Committee will deliberate on the candidates’ inputs in the interviews on Friday, 19 May 2017. “The Committee hopes to make its final recommendation to the National Assembly on its approved candidate next week after inputs by the different political parties and foresee the final decision on a preferred candidate within one month.”

She assured candidates that the Committee would not take a snap decision on the matter, but would be digesting it and discussing it before making a recommendation to the National Assembly, where the final decision would be taken.

Ms Fubbs stated that the process was open to the public and any other stakeholder for observation.

The Committee prepared a list of questions and the same questions were asked to all candidates. These included identifying the five-year strategic objectives/priorities for the Commission, what system or process would the candidates implement to monitor and evaluate the progress made in achieving these strategic objectives or priorities, and what strategies should the Commission implement in order to assess the impact of the funds disbursed not only for urban areas, but for rural communities as well.

Today’s interviews followed the process by which an appointment can only be made after the Minister has by notice in the Gazette and, in at least two newspapers, invited interested parties to nominate suitable candidates. In compliance with the Lotteries Act, 1997 (Act No.57 of 1997) as amended, the Minister has submitted the names of the nominated candidates to Parliament for consideration.

The Committee interviewed Mr W Huma, Mr A Mawela and Prof N Nevhutanda. “The Committee will now have to come to a conclusion as to who is the most suitable candidate to fill the position of Chairperson of the Board of the National Lotteries Commission, someone who can provide leadership, who is accountable and understands what is expected of him,” Ms Fubbs said.
