Parliament, Friday, 10 March 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Tourism received a briefing from the National Department of Tourism (NDT) on its 3rd Quarterly Performance Report for the 2016/17 financial year.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Beatrice Ngcobo, acknowledged the 10 million international tourist arrivals in 2016, an 18% increase. On the domestic side, more people are travelling within the country. This is encouraging, as it boosts the industry and is an anchor strategy for any successful tourism destination.

The participation of the Department of Tourism in the international arena, including the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa (RETOSA) is bearing fruit. Through these activities, South Africa has been able to influence the regional tourism agenda.

The Chairperson also said it was encouraging to note that the Department has already spent 70% of the appropriated budget for 2016/17 and is on course to achieve most of its objectives.

The Committee encourages the Department to do more work on rural, township and marine tourism.
