Parliament, Friday, 17 November 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Police mourns the killing of Constable Jabulani Mavundla stationed at the Mbongolowane police station, KwaZulu-Natal, and the wounding of his colleague.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Constable Mavundla’s family and colleagues. The Committee urges police officers in the area to reinforce their investigative efforts to find Constable Mavundla’s killers to ensure justice,” said Mr Francois Beukman, the Chairperson of the Committee.

The Committee believes that the murder rate and the killing of police officers is unacceptably high. The Committee has repeatedly called for strategies to curb these acts, as they present a tangible danger and a feeling of insecurity within the country.

Meanwhile, the Committee wishes a speedy recovery to two officers shot and wounded in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal. The Committee calls on the community to work with the police to find all the perpetrators of these heinous crimes.

“South Africa will never win the fight against crime if there is no cooperation between the community and the police. Police depend on the information provided by the people in order to successfully prevent and investigate crime. It is this cooperation that is necessary to resolve Constable Mavundla’s murder and the attempted murder of the two police officers in Inanda,” Mr Beukman emphasised.
