Parliament, Thursday 23 November 2017 - Parliament unequivocally dismisses as false the claim that either the National Assembly or the National Council of Provinces will “be voting this week whether Christianity should be silenced”.

The claim has been circulating on social media platforms, including WhatsApp.

Parliament categorically states that there exists no such proposal before it for consideration. In addition, such a proposal would be grossly unconstitutional.

The Constitution, the supreme law of our land, is very clear that: “Everyone has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion”. This is contained in section 15 - Freedom of religion, belief and opinion – in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights.

Such a hoax is unfortunate and Parliament urges members of the public to ignore it.
