Parliament, Monday, 08 May 2017 – The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) will tomorrow be briefed by the Auditor-General on conflict of interest in government.
In 2008, the Auditor-General performed a transversal performance audit of all national departments to determine the extent of employee conflict of interest in the procurement process. Based on the key findings, the Auditor-General made certain recommendations for action by relevant stakeholders. These stakeholders are the National Treasury, the Department of Public Service and Administration, the Public Service Commission and various departments whose employees are directors or members of companies that did business with national departments, but failed to declare their interest on the financial disclosure form.
In light of the escalating amount of irregular expenditure in government, Scopa now wants find out the extent to which government departments have been responsive to the findings and recommendations of the Auditor-General since the 2008 report. After the briefing from the Auditor-General, Scopa will be able to determine the worst performing departments and follow up with those departments.
