Parliament, Thursday, 24 May 2018 – The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises has welcomed the appointment of the new boards of state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

Committee Chairperson Ms Lungi Mnganga-Gcbashe said the committee welcomes the news today of the appointment of Mr Phakamani Hadebe as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eskom. The committee further noted and welcomed the appointments of the boards at South African Express, led by Chairperson Ms Mmakeaya Tryphosa Ramano, and the confirmation of the appointments of Mr Popo Molefe at Transnet and Ms Monhla Hlahla at Denel in recent weeks.

Committee Chairperson Ms Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe said the committee has noted the good work done by Mr Hadebe at Eskom, since he was appointed interim CEO in January this year. “He brings the experience of the Land Bank, the National Treasury and Absa to the position. We believe he has the right skill set to stabilise Eskom, something the country needs desperately.

“We have confidence that the new board members, who have been appointed and confirmed, will be able to bring about changes in governance and restore financial stability in the respective SOEs,” she said.
