Parliament, Sunday, 01 October 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Police will on Monday commence with its scrutiny of the 2016/17 annual reports of the institutions and entities it oversees. This includes the South African Police Services (SAPS), the Civilian Police Secretariat (CPS) and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The Committee Chairperson, Mr Francois Beukman, said the focus would be on the findings of the Auditor-General as well as the general state of finances in the three institutions. “The Portfolio Committee needs to know what the quality of leadership and financial management have been in the past financial year and what is the view of the Auditor-General as the supreme audit institution in the country on the said institutions.”

The Office of the Auditor-General will brief the Committee on Monday morning on the audit outcomes of SAPS, CPS and IPID. Mr Beukman said that the Committee will especially look at the response time of management on previous audit opinions, stability in key positions and the key drivers of internal controls during its oversight this week.

“If the senior management of the institutions did not follow through on their commitments in the previous year to address the root causes of poor audit outcomes, the Committee will make very strong recommendations to the Executive Authority,” said Mr Beukman. The Committee will also assess the quality of performance information of the departments and compliance to legislation.
