Sunday, 20 August 2017 – Plenary sittings of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces featuring Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, 38 committee meetings and public hearings tomorrow on the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, are among items scheduled for this week.

On Wednesday, the Deputy President is scheduled to provide answers to questions for oral reply from Members of Parliament (MPs) at a plenary sitting of the National Assembly. On Friday, he is scheduled to deliver an annual address to a plenary sitting of the National Council of Provinces in Free State.

National Council of Provinces Chairperson Ms Thandi Modise is leading the National Council of Provinces’ flagship Taking Parliament to the People programme in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in Free State. The oversight and public hearing programme, which starts tomorrow, concludes on Friday with the address from the Deputy President.

Besides the questions for oral reply session with the Deputy President, a wide range of other issues are scheduled for the plenary sittings of the National Assembly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. They include condolences for MP Mr Trevor Bonhomme who passed away in July, Bills (the Red Tape Impact Assessment Bill, the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Amendment Bill, an interim report of the Portfolio Committee on Labour on the Labour Laws Amendment Bill), recommedation of candidates to fill vacancies on the Council of the Independent Communications Authority of SA, an 85-minute debate (on defining a strategy to give necessay impetus to tangible economic growth) and reports from committees on various subjects.

Almost half the committee meetings, scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, involve scrutiny of the financials of government departments and entities. Consideration of Bills also features strongly and there are deliberations on topical issues. The schedued committee meetings include:

Standing Committee on Public Accounts follow-up hearing with the Department of Water Affairs on irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure (Tuesday)

Portfolio Committee on Social Development briefing from the Auditor General on feedback about issues related to implementation of the Constitutional Court report (Wednesday)

Standing Committee on Finance deliberations on the role of cooperative banks (Wednesday)

Ad Hoc Committee on Funding of Political Parties review of the regulatory framework governing funding (Tuesday, Wednesday)

Standing Committee on Public Accounts hearing on South African Airways’ irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure (Wednesday)

Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry deliberations on the Copyright Amendment Bill (Tuesday)
