Parliament, Thursday 16 March 2017 – On behalf of Parliament, the Presiding Officers wish anti-apartheid stalwart, Mr Ahmed Kathrada, a speedy recovery.

We have learnt with concern that this courageous and unwavering combatant in our struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa has suffered health related setbacks since his operation earlier this month.  Uncle Kathy, as he is affectionately known, was among the first generation of Members of the democratic Parliament to be sworn in on 9 May 1994.

He retired from Parliament in 1999, but continued his lifelong activism in promoting the society envisaged in the Freedom Charter and the Constitution, thereby inspiring others to be agents for social change.

South Africa continues to be fortunate to have in its midst liberation icons of Uncle Kathy's calibre, who remain the fountain of wisdom and an embodiment of selflessness and compassion. We wish him a speedy recovery.
