Parliament, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 – The Ad Hoc Committee on the Funding of Political Parties will today sit for the first time to elect a chairperson. The Committee was established by a resolution of the National Assembly (NA) on 6 June 2017, in terms of the NA Rule 253 (1) (a).

Its terms of reference is to enquire into and make recommendations on funding of political parties represented in national and provincial legislatures in South Africa with a view to introducing amendments to the legislation, if necessary.

The Committee will consist of 11 members, six of which will come from the African National Congress, two from the Democratic Alliance, one from the Economic Freedom Fighters and another two from the remainder of the parties represented in the NA.

The Committee will exercise those powers in Rule 167 that may assist in carrying out its task, and will report back to the NA no later than 30 November 2017.
