Parliament, Sunday 9 December 2018 – National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Chairperson Ms Thandi Modise has arrived in the Russian Federation capital, Moscow, for her official visit from 8 to 12 December.

The NCOP Chairperson was invited by that country’s Federation Council, one of the Houses of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, to participate in an international conference on: “The role of Parliaments in the modern world and the Council of the Russian federation 25 years on the path of multifaceted development”.

The conference is to be held on 10 December at the Council’s Chambers in Moscow and is expected to engage foreign Parliaments and representatives of international parliamentary organisations. Ms Modise is one of the speakers expected to address the conference. Chairperson of the Federation Council Ms Valentina Matviyenko will also hold a working dinner in honour of Ms Modise, at the end of the conference.

On Tuesday, Ms Modise will address a special a commemorative event in Moscow, to mark the centenaries of former President Nelson Mandela and struggle stalwart Ms Albertina Sisulu.

It is part of this year’s commemoration of these centenary birthdays. It has included National Assembly Speaker Ms Baleka Mbete’s address to a special session of the 139th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly and to the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Parliamentary Forum – both in October. In November, Ms Modise addressed a special sitting of the Chamber of Deputies, one of the Houses of the Parliament of the Republic of Chile, on the centenary commemoration.
