Parliament, Tuesday, 28 March 2017 – Mpumalanga residents will have their opportunity to make oral and written submissions on the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill during public hearings to be held tomorrow and Thursday in Nelspruit and KwaMhlanga respectively.

The Nelspruit hearings will be held at the Mbombela Stadium Hall on Wednesday, 29 March, while the KwaMhlanga hearings on Thursday, 30 March, will be held at the Thembisile Hani Hall in Kwaggafontein. Both hearings start at 10 am.

The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) was in Polokwane today, where it concluded its Limpopo leg of public consultations.

Like the residents of Vhembe District who expressed support for the Bill during yesterday’s public hearings in Thohoyandou, the community members of the Capricorn District also said the Khoi and San communities and leaders must be included in the country’s traditional leadership statutes.

Over and above the ongoing concerns about such things as the title of the Bill and land challenges, residents of the Capricorn District called for a standardised remuneration structure for all traditional leaders. They also called for appropriate compensation and recognition of headmen and headwomen, among other proposals.

Committee Chairperson Mr Richard Mdakane reiterated the fact that all proposals made during these hearings will be duly considered. He once more assured the residents that the window for comments on the Bill is still open and encouraged them to send their submissions to Parliament.
