Parliament, 6 February 2023 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr Sahlulele Luzipo, expressed gratitude for the successful opening and first day of the 2023 African Mining Indaba.

The four-day Indaba is held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 6 to 9 February 2023.

Mr Luzipo said that although the event provides confidence in South Africa as a mining investment destination, he would still like to see discussions on matters of national interest such as illegal mining and the development of mining communities.

Furthermore, he would also like to see the event benefiting township economies through tourism spin-offs.

“The Indaba provides an opportunity for Africa to meet the world. Also, it highlights the fact that the mining sector plays a central role in many African economies,” said Mr Luzipo.

Accordingly, the indaba should not only provide the continent with the opportunity for innovation and discovery of new value-add commodities but it should also come up with clear strategies to promote intra-Africa trade.

Mr Luzipo is looking forward to a successful event with enriching engagements and hopes that participants will discuss common challenges in the sector such as the licensing regime and manufacturing for beneficiation purposes.
