Parliament, Friday, 1 December 2023 – The Portfolio Committee on Police has welcomed the state of readiness of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to combat crime this festive season.
Provincial commissioners led by the Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Constance Mosikili, briefed the committee on Friday afternoon on progress with implementing infrastructure and capital projects, conditions at police stations, the safer season campaign and the state of community policing forums in their respective provinces.
Provincial commissioners from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga said that plans are in place to implement crime-combating initiatives in addition to the national Operation Shanela.
The committee has, however, noted with concern the challenges in some provinces relating to insufficient manpower, vehicles, holding cells and poor conditions at some of the police stations. The committee was encouraged by the fact that SAPS members remain committed to fighting crime and do more with the little that they have.
The committee also welcomed progress in the construction of Muyexe Police Station in Limpopo’s Mopani District, which is 99% complete. It also welcomed the imminent intake of over 1 000 new recruits in KZN and Eastern Cape that will augment manpower during the festive season and beyond.
According to the committee, the Department of Police requires as much support as it can get and, therefore, the committee has resolved to have a follow-up meeting next week.
Tomorrow, the committee will be conducting an oversight visit at the Muyexe Police Station outside Giyani in Limpopo. The Station Commander is also expected to brief the committee on the state of the police station. Committee members will also inspect the construction project.
