Parliament, Thursday, 25 November 2021 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Mr Fikile Xasa, has noted with appreciation the establishment of coalitions at various municipalities, after there was no outright winner in the local government elections.

The committee commends the various political parties who agreed to work with other political parties to ensure that there is effective governance at all municipalities and above all, the municipalities meet the purpose for which they exist of serving the people. The committee has noted that the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality was the last one to establish its council and elect its leadership yesterday.

The committee would like to congratulate the new municipal councils and wish them well and success in this term. “As the committee, we are calling on all the municipalities to ensure that the wheels of service delivery are always in motion and running,” said Mr Xasa.

The committee also appreciates the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for presiding over the elections in a fair and transparent manner. Entities such as the commission are important for our democracy. A new term is always a chance to improve on governance and financial management at local government level.
