Parliament, Thursday, 29 September 2022 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Beauty Dlulane, has noted with disappointment the comments attributed to her about the National Arts Council (NAC) in a story carried by yesterday’s Independent Online (IOL) platform, headlined: “MP proposes placing National Arts Council under administration”.

The meeting in which the comments were made took place virtually on 2 September 2022, where the NAC appeared before the committee to brief it on allegations of governance challenges and Council member resignations, as well as the state of readiness to disburse the third round of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) funding for the arts and culture sector.

According to the story on the IOL platform, “DA MP Tsepo Mhlongo sponsored a motion in the committee to put the troubled NAC under administration. Arts and Culture committee Chairperson Nomvuzo Dlulane said she would support the motion.” This is incorrect.

Ms Dlulane said the proposal for the NAC to be put under administration required the support of all members of the committee and the view of the committee on the proposal was unfortunately never tested.

Also in the story Ms Dlulane is incorrectly reported to have referred to the minutes of the NAC meetings. Ms Dlulane said that, from its inception, the entity has not performed and that at times it would be unprepared when it came to brief the committee. She said that can be supported by minutes of the committee meetings, not of the NAC.

Ms Dlulane has expressed her disappointment with the shocking unethical journalism of the IOL journalist. “The journalist created comments and, regrettably, attributed them to me. I hope that IOL will act on that glaring unethical journalism,” said Ms Dlulane.
