Parliament, Friday, 30 July 2021 –The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Beauty Dlulane, has noted with appreciation South Africa’s gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

“It is only fair that we extend a congratulatory note to Tatjana Schoenmaker, the golden girl. The committee is excited that she took it upon herself to earn SA’s first gold in the manner she did in the 200m breaststroke event early this morning.”

Schoenmaker added to her silver medal she won earlier in the week, as well as the silver medal won the women’s surfing by Bianca Buitendag.

Ms Dlulane sends her good wishes the South African team members who are still to compete.

“We are proud of this win for Schoenmaker. The win is South Africa’s and we share in her joy,” Ms Dlulane said.

Other medal hopefuls for team South Africa include Wayde van Niekerk and Akani Simbine, when the track events get underway.
