Parliament, Thursday, 19 May 2022 – The Portfolio Committee on Environment, Forestry and Fisheries will tomorrow receive a briefing from department on progress towards achieving transformation in the forestry sector and in resolving the inherent challenges faced by the Forestry branch/programme. The committee will be briefed on the status of plantation forests and ownership of categories A, B and C with regard to claimed, undergoing claims and unclaimed hectarage and payment of rentals; progress in addressing high levels of “temporary unplanted areas”; land invasions; timber theft; regulatory and enforcement capacity; an ageing and ailing workforce; and if there are compelling reasons for the department to manage plantation forests, considering that about 70% of the branch’s budget is allocated for salaries.
