Parliament, Monday, 24 February 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education will tomorrow, Tuesday 25 February 2025, continue with its oversight visit to schools in the Ugu Education District in KwaZulu-Natal.
The committee started its visit today with visits to schools in the Ugu Education District and thereafter to schools in the Ilembe Education District.
Committee Chairperson Ms Joy Maimela said the primary purpose of the oversight visit is, among other things, to assess the state of school readiness for the 2025 academic year. The issues the committee will focus on include learner admissions and teacher/learner ratios, early childhood development, National Senior Certificate 2024 results and improvement plans for 2025, as well as the implementation of the curriculum, including coding and robotics, mathematics and science and technology (MST).
The committee will also focus on support for rural education and special schools (i.e. provisioning of resources, user-friendly infrastructure, and preparing learners for post-school education/entry to workplace-based learning programmes.
The programme for tomorrow is:
09:00 – 10:30 Sibuyile Senior Secondary School
12:00 – 13:30 Gugulesizwe Senior Secondary School (Technical High)
14:30 – 17:30 Meeting: National Department of Basic Education, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Department of Education (including the Office of the MEC, HOD, senior and district officials), Portfolio Committee on Education (Provincial Legislature), National + Provincial Treasury, Provincial House of Traditional Leaders, SGB Associations, Organised Labour and SA Principals Association.
