Limpopo resident Mr Hlengani Phineas Chauke making a submission, during public hearings on the Traditional and Khoisan Leadership Bill, in Thohoyandou.

Parliament, Monday, 27 March 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) says it is pleased with the support voiced by the people of Thohoyandou for the principle of legislation that recognises Khoi and San traditional leadership.

“Although there were no Khoi-San representatives during today’s hearings, it was very encouraging to hear traditional leaders and people of this region acknowledging the importance of having a law that recognises the traditional leadership system of the Khoi and San people,” said Committee Chairperson Mr Richard Mdakane.

Mr Mdakane added there were other concerns raised by the residents of this region, issues such as land, the title of the Bill and the need to finalise outstanding applications for the recognition of some traditional leaders. These concerns, according to Mr Mdakane, will be taken into account and those under the provenance of other Committees and structures will be directed accordingly.

Mr Mdakane further encouraged those who would still like to make additional written submissions to email them to scassiem@parliament.gov.za. He added that the process of public comments will remain open well into the second half of 2017.

Tomorrow (Tuesday. 28 March 2017), the Committee will be holding hearings in Polokwane at the Central City Hall, from 10 am. The Committee will then proceed to Mpumalanga to hold similar hearings at Nelspruit’s Mbombela stadium hall on Wednesday, 29 March, and in KwaMhlanga on 30 March at Thembisile Hani Community Hall in Kwaggafontein. The final hearings will be held in Pretoria on Friday, 31 March, at the Eersterust Civic Centre.
