Parliament, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements was today pleased by delivery of housing projects in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality in the North West province.

“The situation here is much better than the unpleasant one we saw in Mafikeng and Matlosana municipalities on Monday and Tuesday. Projects here are completed and ready for occupation, unlike other municipalities where a lot of projects cannot be completed due to a range of challenges,” said Committee Chairperson, Ms Nocawe Mafu.

Ms Mafu said this during today’s Committee’s visit to Moses Kotane municipality where it witnessed projects such as the Mogwase Communal Residential Units (CRUs) that were completed ahead of time and ready for occupation. Mogwase CRU, which has 110 flats, ranging from bachelor to three-bedroom flats, started in June 2016 and was completed this year.

The Committee said this was an improvement, considering that other municipalities had projects that started as far back as 2014, but were not yet completed.

The Committee said its happiness with the progress it witnessed in some of the housing projects in this Moses Kotane municipality, does not mean there are no challenges. “We also saw informal settlements in this municipality that must still be upgraded to proper houses and we hope the municipality will do its best to provide descent homes to these residents,” added Ms Mafu.

The Committee will inspect housing projects in Rustenburg tomorrow (Thursday, 17 August). Tomorrow’s visit will start with a briefing meeting by the municipality at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, at 9am.
