Parliament, Saturday, 14 October 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs has observed with shock the recent devastating floods that affected residents of KwaZulu-Natal especially in the eThekwini Municipality.

The devastation on the daily lives of these South Africans while surely daunting must and will be overcome through mutual effort. In light of this obligation, the Committee has urged the Department of Home Affairs to activate its civic services and assist the victims of the floods with issuance of civic documentation such as IDs and Birth Certificates that might have been lost in the floods. The speedy issuance of these civic documentation will go a long way in enabling the victims to start a process towards rebuilding their lives.

The Committee also calls on non-governmental agencies and donors to land a helping hand in reducing the burden of challenges faced by these South Africans. The government is doing all it can but it cannot carry the burden alone without the assistance of donors in assisting people affected by these floods.
