Parliament, Sunday 20, June 2021 â€“ The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) concludes its second term program with two plenary sittings and the Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Thandi Modise, will lead a multi-party Parliamentary delegation to the 49th virtual Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF) taking place 25 -27 June 2021. Committee meetings of both Houses including public hearings are also scheduled this week.

The NCOP will this week have two plenary sittings on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesdays sitting will feature an oral and answer session of Security Cluster 1B Ministers. This cluster comprises of Ministers of International Relations, State Security and Home Affairs. The sitting on Wednesday will debate the Report of the Ad Hoc Committee on the section 100 Intervention in the North-West Province. Both sittings will start at 10:00.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Thandi Modise will lead a multi-party parliamentary delegation to the 49th virtual Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF).

The SADC PF’s 49th Plenary Assembly Virtual Session will be held in collaboration with the Parliament of Botswana from the 25th to the 27th of June 2021. The 49th Plenary Assembly Virtual Session is themed: “Leveraging the AfCFTA for Post-Covid Economic Recovery in Southern Africa: The Role of SADC Parliamentary Forum and National Parliaments".

The Plenary Assembly meets bi-annually and is hosted by one of the member Parliaments on a rotational basis and representatives serve for five years. SADC PF is a regional inter-parliamentary body established in 1997 under Article 9 (2) of the SADC Treaty as an autonomous institution. It is composed of Fifteen (15) parliaments representing over 3500 parliamentarians in the SADC region. These member parliaments are Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), eSwatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Forum seeks to bring regional experiences to bear at the national level and promote best practices in the role of parliaments in regional cooperation and integration as outlined in the SADC Treaty and the Forum Constitution. Mainly, it seeks to provide a platform for parliaments and parliamentarians to promote and improve regional integration in the SADC region through parliamentary involvement and parliamentary diplomacy.

The programme of committees includes public hearings and committee meetings. The Portfolio of Health will hold virtual Public Hearings on the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill. There are sixteen (16) Committee meetings of both Houses.
