Parliament,Friday, 11 May 2018 – The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education andTraining has welcomed the speedy arrest of a suspect in the shooting andkilling of a Vaal University of Technology (VUT) student at residences inVanderbijlpark on Thursday.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Connie September, said the committeeis saddened by this killing, a second one in a mere two weeks.

“The committee wishes to send condolences to the family. The pain oflosing young female students at the hands of former lovers is becomingunbearable. Something drastic needs to be done,” Ms September said.

She reiterated the committee’s call earlier in the week that security atuniversity campuses, campus residences and those residences outside of campusbe tightened.

“The Portfolio committee has now taken a formal decision in its regularWednesday meeting to prioritise this matter as part of its oversight duty toend violence on campuses and student residences,” she said.
