Parliament, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 – The Portfolio Committee on Labour is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of its Chairperson, Ms Fezeka Loliwe, in Fort Beaufort, on Monday.

Committee member, Ms Sharome van Schalkwyk, said the loss of the Chairperson just when the committee needed her most was the most discouraging news.

“It was with shock that we learnt of Fez’s passing when we expected to tap from her leadership depth and skill. She was the engine of the committee and the kind of leader who saw value in each and every member of the committee. The committee is poorer without this leader of the working class,” Ms Van Schalkwyk said.

“Chair Fez knew and understood the concept of poor people’s struggles. At the time of her passing, the committee was pushing to finalise the matter of the National Minimum Wage Bill as well as amendments to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and the Labour Relations Amendment Act. These are all pieces of legislation meant to improve the lives of our people,” she said.

Ms Loliwe passed on Monday in a car accident while conducting her constituency duties in Fort Beaufort.

Ms Van Schalkwyk said the committee was poorer without Ms Loliwe, and that she will be sorely missed.

“Speaking softly while making an impact with words, as she was soft-spoken, was a marvel to watch. Ms Loliwe’s hard work, sharp wit, and inquisitiveness will always be a shining light for the committee. This was a true servant of the people.”
