Parliament, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 – The Portfolio Committee on Police is encouraged by the huge public interest shown in the process of producing a new legislation on Critical Infrastructure Protection Amendment Bill. “This is a very important legislation, replacing an apartheid era one,” said the Chairperson of the Committee Mr Francois Beukman.

Mr Beukman said there are 15 civil society organisations that have given public comments on the Bill. He said the Committee is following a thorough process to ensure that the legislation that is going to be delivered is constitutional. He said the organisations that had submitted comments emphasised the issue of constitutionality of the legislation.

Mr Beukman said the Committee noted the rejection of the Bill by the Right2Know group yesterday. “We are still at the beginning of the process. Nothing we can say now but if there is a necessity to make changes those changes would be made at a right time” said Mr Beukman.

The Committee held public hearings from yesterday (30 January) on the Critical Infrastructure Protection Amendment Bill at Parliament. The Committee will meet other role-players next week at Parliament.
