Parliament, Friday, 11 August 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation wishes to congratulate Team SA athletes who have participated in the World Championships in London over the past two weeks.

The Chairperson, Ms Beauty Dlulane, said South African athletics has made great progress, considering the number of medals won. “It is encouraging to see our athletes excel in the manner they have both on the track and in field events. Many of our sporting heroes have put our country on the map and represented us as nation with enthusiasm,” Ms Dlulane said.

“There can never be a better platform and a better foundation for Athletics SA and SASCOC [South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee] to build for the future than the kind of performances our athletes have demonstrated in London. The Committee and all South Africans truly appreciated the performances of all the athletes,” she said.

Athletes Mr Luvo Manyonga and Mr Wayde van Niekerk have already won gold in their events. Mr Van Niekerk also collected a silver medal in the 200m event last night. Ms Caster Semenya has progressed to the semis of her event (the 800m) and has already won a bronze medal in the 1 500m.

The Committee wishes Ms Semenya everything of the best in the race tonight and going into the final. The games end on Sunday.
