Tuesday, 16 May 2017- Parliament continues its busy schedule tomorrow, with 17 committee meetings scheduled for the morning and four budget vote debates scheduled for mini plenary sittings of the National Assembly in the afternoon.

Tomorrow, the budget vote debates on Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation and on Correctional Services are scheduled from 14.00 to about 16.00. Budget vote debates for the Office of the Chief Justice and Judicial Administration and for Home Affairs are scheduled from about 16.15 to about 18.15.

Debating budget votes is one way in which Parliament conducts oversight over executive action. This is done by examining the plans and budgets of these entities against government’s overall plan of action as elaborated in the State of the Nation Address, the Budget Speech and the National Development Plan.

Another way of examining and overseeing executive action is through oversight visits.

The National Council of Provinces, this week, is in the Xhariep District Municipality, conducting preliminary oversight visits with a focus on delivery of healthcare services. National Council of Provinces Chairperson Ms Thandi Modise is leading these preliminary visits, in preparation for the Taking Parliament to the People: Free State scheduled for August.
