Parliament, Tuesday 7 March 2017 – Today the National Assembly (NA) Plenary will be considering the Report of the Ad Hoc Committee set up to inquire into the ability of the South African Broadcasting Corporation Board to discharge its duties as prescribed in the Broadcasting Act, kicks off a busy week for Parliament. The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Plenary will be asking questions to the Minister in the Peace and Security Cluster at 10.00 today.

Also expected in the NA Plenary tomorrow is the consideration of recommendation of candidates to fill vacancy on Council of Independent Communications Authority, and will be followed by the debate on Promoting harmonious co-existence and respect for the right of all persons, including foreign nationals.

On Thursday at 14.00 the Deputy President will be answering questions from Members of Parliament of the National Assembly. As stipulated in the Constitution the Deputy President is required to answer questions from Members of Parliament. Section 92 (2) of the Constitution stipulates that members of the Cabinet are accountable collectively and individually to Parliament for the exercise of the powers and the performance of their functions.  The procedure for putting questions to the Executive is one of the ways in which Parliament holds the Executive accountable.

At the same time on Thursday the NCOP Plenary will have a debate on the report on the Taking of Parliament to the People programme held at Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality last year.
