Parliament, Tuesday 4 September 2018 – The National Assembly approved the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Amendment Bill.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) Amendment Bill, was tabled as a Committee Bill on 1 March 2018 and published for public comment on 1 June 2018. The Ipid Amendment Bill aims to amend the existing Ipid Act to align it with Constitutional Court provisions inserted by the court’s judgment of 2016. These included the powers of the Minister of Police to take disciplinary steps or to remove the Ipid Executive Director, among other things. The amendments will provide, among other things, for greater independence of the Ipid Executive Director and greater certainty on the process of suspending and removing the Executive Director.

The Bill will now be sent to the National Council of Provinces for concurrence.

Also approved were names of candidates nominated for appointment as members of the Electoral Commission, which the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs presented to the House for consideration. The three candidates recommended are Judge Dhayanithie Pillay, Mr Mosotho Simon Moepya and Dr Nomsa Praisy Masuku.

The committee had called for public comment on shortlisted names between 21 and 24 August and received 32 submissions. The committee met on 28 August and recommended the three candidates which the National Assembly approved today.
