Have Your Say: Invitation for Public Submissions on the Civil Union Bill [B11–2018]

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs (National Assembly) encourages interested individuals and organisations to submit written comments on the Civil Union Amendment Bill [B11-2018]

Purpose of the Bill

The purpose of the Civil Union Amendment Bill (the “Bill”) is to repeal section 6 of the Civil Union Act, 2006 (Act No. 17 of 2006), which allows a marriage officer in the employ of the State to inform the Minister of Home Affairs that he or she objects on the grounds of conscience, religion, and belief, to solemnizing a civil union between persons of the same sex.

Written submissions must be addressed to Mr Eddy Mathonsi, the Committee Secretary: P.O. Box 15, Cape Town or emailed to: emathonsi@parliament.gov.za or faxed to 086 655 0502. Written submissions must reach Parliament by no later than 23 October 2018 at 16:00. In addition to written submissions, kindly indicate if you would like to make oral submissions.
