Parliament to Hold Hearings on Service Delivery

Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Service Delivery will next week (February 2 – 4, 2010) kick-start its nation-wide public hearings that are aimed at finding out more about progress in service delivery.

Next week’s public hearings will be held at Parliament before moving to provinces later in the month.

On September 22 last year the National Assembly resolved to establish an Ad Hoc Committee to conduct oversight visits on service delivery under the theme “Working together to ensure the delivery of quality services to communities”.

Committee chairperson Lechesa Tsenoli said the committee will use the hearings to also find out about the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs’ turnaround strategy.

“Now that the department has completed its strategy we will be going to establish what processes are underway. We will seek feedback on the strategy and the readiness of the municipalities,” Tsenoli said.

The Committee, which consists of 43 members and is chaired by Mr Lechesa Tsenoli, will be divided into three groups - with each group expected to hold hearings in at least three provinces. The members of the Committee were drawn from the following committees: Human Settlements, Energy, Social Development, Health, Water and Environmental Affairs, Basic Education, Transport, and Rural Development and Land Reform. Political organizations are represented proportionally as follows: ANC 17; DA 5; Cope 3; IFP 2 and other parties 2.
