Info Bill: Final Hearings in Old Assembly
A public interest defence clause should be allowed in the Protection of State Information Bill. That was the argument of several entities who took part in the public hearings on the Bill at Parliament on Monday week, including the South African National Editors’ Forum, the Law Society of South Africa, and the Human Rights Commission.
Eighteen institutions -including the Public Protector (represented by Thuli Madonsela), Cosatu and the Nelson Mandela Foundation- are on the roster for the final four days of public hearings for and against the Bill.
Veteran human rights advocate George Bizos who helped defend Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki at the Rivonia treason trial, is also scheduled to present the Legal Resources Centre case against the Protection of State Information Bill.
